Philosophy:

Developing effective and positive social skills is vital to a child's happiness and to feeling successful at home, school, and in their community. We believe that some children need an extra boost and guidance in order to develop those skills.

Friendship Group helps children achieve enhanced social skills in a positive and fun environment. Each class consists of 6 to 8 children in the same developmental range, usually one or two school grades apart. Karen and Lisa Ann co-facilitate the class.

We believe that children learn best and make the most growth when they feel successful and safe. Children learn by doing and by playing. They need to incorporate all their senses and need time to practice skills over and over. This process allows them to build new neural pathways and to expand their repertoire of skills.

Friendship Group occurs over the course of an academic year. We want to give the children lots of time to practice skills. We also break down these skills into manageable, concrete steps to encourage learning. Homework is given every week. Homework encourages dialogue with parents and other family members and helps to generalize the skills. Our suggestions are family friendly and are easily incorporated into family life.

The real magic of group occurs because children are feeling safe and learning new skills with their peers. Every week they have an opportunity for positive social interactions with their classmates. They become friends, feel successful, and gain confidence and a sense of self efficacy.
